The judo competition closed with Cuba beating Brazil to win the mixed team title and the great Idalys Ortiz adding another gold to her glittering resume. It was the perfect Pan Am Games goodbye for the 34-year-old four-times Olympic medallist, who has announced she will retire after next year's Paris Summer Games. Fencing was an all-American battle on Tuesday with Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist Nick Itkin and Magda Skarbonkiewicz taking gold. SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — Television crews at the Pan American Games had equipment stolen this week from the compound of Estadio Nacional, the site of Friday's opening ceremony, heightening concerns about crime at the tournament hosting over 6,800 athletes. A contractor, and not local police, was in charge of security at the Estadio Nacional compound when the incident took place. The Pan American Games, the largest multisport event in the Americas, are held one year before the Olympics. Police presence at Estadio Nacional was greater Thursday than at the beginning of the week. Organizers of the Pan American Games had previously told The Associated Press they had increased their attention in check points at the gates of every sporting venue.

CNN —FC Barcelona President Joan Laporta is officially being investigated as a “suspect” in the ongoing alleged improper payment scandal, according to court documents obtained by CNN – the latest twist in a scandal overshadowing the club and Spanish soccer. The investigation relates to alleged improper payments made by Barça to José María Enríquez Negreira, a former leading refereeing official in Spain. CNN has reached out to FC Barcelona for comment from Laporta but has yet to hear back. Inside the opening 10 seconds of Colo-Colo’s Chilean Cup match against Unión La Calera, Colo-Colo defender Alan Saldivia played a wayward pass back to goalkeeper Fernando de Paul. To make matters worse, before La Calera could even make its case to the officials, Colo-Colo went up the other end and immediately scored to make it 1-0. Adding insult to injury, Colo-Colo went on to win the match 6-1 and reach the regional semifinals, while La Calera finished the match with 10 men.
